Lessons
Playing a musical instrument is a source of creativity and pleasure for millions of people around the world. The piano is perhaps the perfect instrument to begin musical studies on. It is the only instrument where complete musical expression can be achieved alone and a decent tone can be produced with a minimum of physical difficulty. The piano is also unique in that every musical note is laid out directly in front of you -- this makes studying music theory uniquely practical. Students often migrate to other instruments later on in life, but they are always thankful for the time they spent studying the piano during their early years.
After six years of teaching in Chicagoland, I have to say goodbye for now to my wonderful students and head for our nation's capital. I will be accepting new students in the Washington, D.C. area starting in September. During my tenure in Chicago, I began to specialize in private in-home piano lessons, and I intend to do the same in Washington. I do not know the exact neighborhoods I will be teaching in yet, so if you are within a reasonable driving distance of the District, please call me and we can probably work something out.
Private in-home piano lessons often create an ideal learning environment. It is obviously quite conveinent for the family; from a pedagogical perspective, this translates into fewer missed lessons and more progress. I also get a closer glimpse into the student's daily life and what will directly be influencing their practice regimen; this could run the gamut from the condition of the instrument to proximity of piano to xbox. There is often more interaction with the parents, leading to better parent-teacher communication.
